Who it is for

What's the best app to organize studying for a certification or licensing exam?

Verified on: October 27, 2026

If you are studying for a big professional exam while working or finishing school, tudy gives the prep a structure: a subject for each section, topics for each content area, tasks for practice sets and mock exams, a focus timer that logs hours, and a streak that keeps the daily habit going over months. It has no prep content or questions, and it does not know exam rules or dates. The Free plan covers up to 5 subjects.

What makes this kind of studying hard

Certification and licensing exams, such as the bar exam, the CPA, NCLEX or professional certifications, have a different shape from classes. There is no professor, no weekly problem set, and no one checking in. You pick a test date, buy a prep course, and then spend two to six months, in many cases around a full-time job, working through content that you have to retain until the day of the exam.

The usual failure is not bad content. It is a plan that lives in your head: you start strong, miss a week, lose track of what you covered, and cannot tell if you are on pace. By the time you notice, the exam date is close and the options are narrow.

Break the exam into a plan you can see

One subject per exam section. If your exam has four sections, make four subjects. If it has twelve content areas, you may need Pro, since the Free plan allows 5 subjects. Pro has no limit.

Topics for content areas. Within each subject, topics mark the areas you study. Every task and every timer session can be tied to a topic, so your stats show where your hours really went. The Free plan gives you 2 topics per subject, which is enough for a rough split, but a detailed plan usually calls for Pro. See Topics.

Tasks for the work. “Finish chapter 6 videos,” “Do 50 practice questions in section B,” “Take full-length mock exam” are all tasks with due dates. Practice sets that repeat (for example, “20 questions” every weekday) can be set as repeating tasks on Pro, and they never pile up: there is always exactly one open.

The Calendar for the date that matters. Put the exam on the Calendar as an exam event. Add your mock exam dates too. tudy has no countdown widget, but you can watch the date approach in the month view.

Log your hours honestly

The most useful number in long prep is your actual hours. Run the focus timer (Pomodoro or stopwatch) on the right subject and topic, and the stats show your time by subject, week by week. A 3-hour check-in prompt keeps the timer from logging time you were away. If you studied somewhere else, add the time manually. It counts toward your streak but does not earn XP.

On Pro, Insights adds a heat map of the last few months and your average focus by day of the week. If your numbers show you studied almost nothing on Thursdays for two months, you will see it.

Practice tests and weak areas

tudy does not score tests. But you can log each practice test as a task, then use a notebook in the subject to write down what you missed and why, as a checklist you can tick off as you review each weak area. Notebooks support headings, lists, checklists, highlights and links. Free allows 2 notebooks per subject; Pro is unlimited.

A streak for the long middle

The middle of a long prep is where most people slip. The streak counts consecutive study days: finish a task, run the timer for one minute or complete a flashcard round. Sunday is a rest day that does not break it, and consistent days earn streak freezes (up to 2). Flashcards here are simple review rounds, not spaced repetition. For heavy memorization, a dedicated spaced repetition tool such as Anki works better.

If you want a second opinion on your schedule, Talk to tudy (Pro, 7 messages a day) can propose a plan with tasks and dates that you confirm before they are added. It does not know your exam’s rules or content, so give it the facts. See Talk to tudy.

What tudy does not do

  • No prep content, no question bank, no mock exams.
  • No exam dates, rules or scoring information. Use the official source.
  • No score tracking.
  • No offline mode.
  • No sync with Google Calendar. Pro can export an .ics file.

Pricing

Free covers a simple plan. Pro is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, card only. If your prep runs fewer than seven months, paying month to month costs less than the yearly plan.

Where to start

Pick your exam date, put it on the Calendar, create one subject per section and one topic per content area, and run the timer on your next session.

Frequently asked questions

Does tudy include practice questions for licensing exams?

No. tudy has no question bank or prep content for the bar, CPA, NCLEX or any other exam. It organizes your plan, tracks your study hours and keeps you consistent while you use your prep provider's materials.

Can I track practice test results in tudy?

Not as scores. You can log each practice test as a task, put notes about weak areas in a notebook, and track the time you spent. There is no built-in score tracker.

Can tudy count down to my exam date?

There is no countdown widget. Put your exam on the Calendar as an exam event, and it shows up on its date in the month view, in your subject's color.
